Hello Everyone

I have been working on an online project to spread the word about action in
the sustainable energy forum.

We are holding an online casestudy competition with 10 entries of real
people around the world making a difference for the sustainable energy
future of us all.

As part of the campaign we are also testing the Diffusion of Influence in
online social networks such as facebook. We decided to use the same survey
tool and attach a few questions to the vote regarding demographics and how
the influence spread.

We will keep this survey vote open until the end of May- I am attaching the

What is GRAIN? GRAIN stands for Global Responsibility and Innovation Network. It is a globally responsible social network that connects the academic, private, and professional communities to actively design technologies and implement solutions for sustainable development.

What does ‘globally responsible innovation’ mean? Globally Responsible Innovation is a mindset that strives to incorporate perspectives across cultures, disciplines and organizations in order to generate projects or products that are successful and sustainable -- culturally, economically and environmentally-- from idea to implementation.

What can GRAIN do for me? GRAIN provides a connections between a multi-disciplinary network of academics, entrepreneurs, professionals, and organizations to facilitate sustainable global development. Depending on your role, we can connect you to projects or participants that will help you acheive your specific vision of a sustainable future.

Whether you have a project of your own, or you are inspired to contribute to an existing project, GRAIN provides the framework to ensure there is alignment for you and all parties on the project, and that you have the necessary tools to increase the success rate of your project.

Featured GRAIN Projects:
From prosthetics to the $10 computer, GRAIN is currently working on several major projects designed to inspire, initiate, and implement worldwide collaboration towards globally responsible innovation.

1. GRAIN has partnered with the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) to expand in a globally responsible way. From setting up a database, to creating the infrastructure for BMES societies to form collectively, GRAIN provides the Innovation Network Process™ for biomedical engineers to:

· collaborate
· integrate global perspectives
when designing and implementing their projects and processes.

2. Additionally, GRAIN is actively synthesizing opportunities for bioengineering students to go global for:
· internships
· research exchanges
· field-based engineering projects

GRAIN has facilitated a mutually benefical collaboration between the University of California San Diego Biomedical Engineering Society student chapter and the Student Society for Biomaterials at Denmark Technical University. This collaboration also opens the door for BMES to expand across Scandinavia and across mainland Europe that affiliated partners with the new North American-European partnership. GRAIN is also in the initial stages of connecting Nanyang Technological University in Singapore with UCSD and BMES. In March, 2008, Garrett Smith, co-founder of GRAIN, visited interested faculty and students in Singapore, and identified student leaders and faculty that would be interested in starting a BMES international chapter and participate in GRAIN related projects. Through facilitating the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) International Project, GRAIN has established collaborative partnerships with students and professors in Southeast Asia, the United States, and Scandinavia.

3. GRAIN Co-founder Derek Lomas has spent 9 months living in Mumbai, India 2007-2008, researching, designing, and initiating the following innovative globally responsible projects:

	$10 TV Computer This is a collaborative effort to develop effective educational software for sub-$20 dollar 8-bit "TV computers." We believe that these existing computers could serve as a platform for locally-relevant, effective educational software for middle income families, particularly in developing economies.

Its mission is to help accelerate sustainable development in rural India by building up a network of social entrepreneurs, donors, volunteers, role models among individuals, NGOs, projects and village folks. The portal has 2001 census data on all the villages (plus cities and towns) in India.

All of us, I am sure, wish to see rural India well developed by 2020. A total transformation to take place, in a sustainable manner, requires addressing the needs at the bottom of the pyramid. This calls for effort by many to pool resources: money, people and knowledge.

OurVillageIndia.org is a platform to facilitate this transformation.
Please visit http://ourvillageindia.org/ . You will see that the portal is still under development. A lot, lot more of work remains to be done to make it a full fledged knowledge repository, for rural India.
You will observe that census data 2001 has been uploaded for all the villages. The rest of the data will be supplied by registered members of the site in a collaborative manner. The site will also list most of the known NGOs and allow missing NGOs to enter their own information.
The site will have 4 main entities: Villages, NGOs, People and Projects.
The site will list all the villages in India in an easy to use format. Once you locate a village of special interest, you will be able to read information on the following: census data, geographic location, infrastructure, local government, history, prominent people, interested volunteers, changemakers and NGOs. Also, you will learn about past and current projects. You will be able, if you wish, to associate yourself with that village as a volunteer or as a friend. If you are interested in publishing more information about that village, you will be able to request publishing rights for that village. If you are interested in a particular project, you will be able to send a request to the project owner to be included.
Any NGO starting a project in a village can provide details about the project and solicit help from other people and other NGOs associated with that village. Each project will showcase its goals, timelines, status, estimated budget, current funds and expenses incurred. When a project is completed, the project-initiator will be able to report on its impact and the lessons to be learned for the future.
In order to complete the task, the organizers of the portal are looking for dedicated volunteers -- IT qualified -- who are willing to commit to spend time (minimum 4 hours a week) on the project.
A prospective IT volunteer needs to have experience in the following areas:
ASP.net 2.0 plus, Visual Studio Express 2005
C# (no VB.net please)
Familiar with OOP concepts
Familiar with SQL Server 2005
Familiarity with Content Management Systems.
The task of the IT volunteers is to develop tools to help other volunteers at the village level to prepare and upload content to the OurVillageIndia.Org site.

GRAIN Partners with Biomedical Engineering Society to Enhance Global Projects

International-Related Opportunities

As bioengineering students, it is often difficult to find opportunities abroad relating to our broad field. This article will provide a few ideas and places to turn to if you are looking for that global edge to you degree.

BMES International:
To begin with, a new International committee was developed for the national, faculty run BMES last year. The committee is in works of building ties with international professors, departments, and laboratories relating to bioengineering research overseas. Additionally, we are creating more awareness-related international internships and engineering based work for social impact. BMES, thus far, has primarily been a US based organization, but is looking into building relationships and new chapters abroad. Developing these mutually beneficial partnerships for students is being advanced by the help of a UCSD Bioengineering PhD student and Whitaker Fellow in Sweden, Garrett Smith. He recounts his thoughts and experiences from his international visits:

“Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with bioengineering student societies at both Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) with the hope of establishing more dialogue between international chapters and our UCSD BMES chapter. Having lived abroad for six months, I believe it is increasingly important for bioengineers to understand the new global factors driving the economy and to be able to collaborate effectively across geographical and cultural barriers. Our BMES chapter at UCSD could greatly benefit by more cultural exchange with students abroad. Meeting with these chapters is only the beginning. Much more needs to be done to learn how to effectively communicate using online tools and holding videoconferences to bring together bioengineering student communities worldwide. We have a good start so far though.I am pleased to mention that the Student Society for Biomaterials (SSB) at the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen (www.biomaterials.dk) has expressed interest to become the first international partner with our UCSD chapter. The International committee of BMES is currently in discussion with SSB leadership in planning future online interactive meetings between our chapters. Please contact us if you would like to learn more. Lastly, I would like to thank all the students and professors who graciously welcomed me to their campuses.”

Additionally, the UCSD BMES chapter is pursuing two objectives for expanding BMES globally. The first objective is to continue building a global bioengineering departmental contact list in order to create a stronger global bioengineering network which would benefit students wanting to connect internationally. The second objective is to create an international opportunities resource specifically for BMES students seeking to apply their degree abroad. This undergraduate and graduate resource list focuses on three main types of opportunities: lab exchanges, industry internships, and engineering-based design projects (also includes collaboration with non-profit organizations in global healthcare and sustainable development). Once these databases are created the information would be made available to all on the BMES website. By bringing together the global academic bioengineering community, and providing better resources for bioengineering abroad, the BMES mission statement ‘to enhance biomedical engineering worldwide” will be expanded upon.

Engineering World Health:
Engineering World Heath at UCSD is the student-based chapter of the global initiative to provide hospitals in developing nations cheap and effective alternative designs to the medical equipment used in daily life. The organization, based out of Duke University, sends over 3000 pieces of medical equipment built by students from various university chapters to developing countries, such as Chile, Mexico, and Tanzania. The organization is always looking for students to help design and build needed equipment. Over the past year, a group of Bioengineering Senior Design Project students built a stand alone cold box that can keep small amounts of medicine at about 10°C for at least 12 hours without the use of electricity. Additionally, there are “Build projects” available as well. Small kits are provided to build existing designs, such as a defibrillator tester or a bili-light (device used in treating jaundice in newborns) tester. EWH also holds a Summer Institute in Costa Rica and Tanzania, among other places, where students can gain hands on experience designing and repairing medical equipment (all while learning the local language!) in hospitals, directly interacting with hospital staff and patients. Global Responsibility and Innovation Network:
Many of the BMES International and EWH objectives are being pursued through the non-profit organization Global Responsibility and Innovation Network (GRaIN). The non-profit, founded by a multi-disciplinary group of UCSD graduate students, provides the framework and the process for globally responsible projects to sprout from idea to execution. From biomaterial prosthetics to the $10 computer, GRaIN is currently working on several major projects designed to inspire, initiate, and implement worldwide collaboration towards globally responsible innovation. GRaIN has partnered with the UCSD BMES and EWH chapters to expand their international projects in a culturally responsible way. From setting up a database, to creating the infrastructure for BMES societies to form collectively, GRaIN provides the innovation network process for bioengineers to effectively collaborate across cultural and geographical borders. GRaIN is also exploring new innovation models that decrease the divide between academic bioengineering research and the healthcare and sustainability needs of the poor in developing economies. ORGANIZATIONAL & PARTNERSHIPS

501(c)3 Non-profit Corporation: Weare going to officially make GRAIN an official non-profit, consisting of global members, and Chapters at various institutions, such as UCSD and Srishti Institute.
- Memberships: The member can be part of GRaIN, without necessarily being affiliated with a particular chapter. Membership ascribes the benefit of access to the "Grainium Network" that features people-project matching, member forums, and other features. We discussed having a small membership fee for the Grainium Network of ~$5 - $15 per year, and a Charter Fee of ~$100 per year. However, we would waive the fees initially to grow the membership and success stories. We also discussed having an "Invitation Only" style of membership, such as the Gmail invitations, as a way of personalizing the process and educating/hooking future members. For example, Alex tells Bob "Hey, there's this cool group, GRaIN, that I think you'd like. Here's how you join." Bob will be more likely to actually sign up and participate in the community. Moreover, we discussed targeting specific academic and corporate innovators with "Membership Invitations," to make them feel more inclined to get involved with GRaIN.
- Chapters: We will focus on a couple core "Founding Chapters," like UCSD, Srishti Institute, MIT DevLab, etc. After establishing the core "Founding Chapters," Chapters should coalesce organically when a particular place reaches a critical mass of people involved with GRaIN. At that point, Chapters can organize and hold their own Chapter events, such as the Grain(y) Film Series @ Calit2. This methodology avoids potential conflicts of interest that can arise between Academic institutions and non-profit organizations, case in point UCSD vs. TIN, by having events hosted by the local student organization or Chapter. Chapter-based events also bolster local support, giving the organization a more solid foundation, more extensive "field agents" in the world.
- UCSD Chapter: Sneha has filed as a SOLO recognized student organization. We will also need a "Charter" (basically, the same as the Constitution filed with UCSD's SOLO) to file with GRaiN. Sneha was nominated draft a Charter for the UCSD GRaIN Chapter.
- Corporate Filing: Nikki's husband, Ed, is a lawyer will do the corporate filing. The main tasks for us to complete include: Articles of Incorporation, Mission Statement, Mailing address for legal correspondence (taxes, filings, suits), and basic officers (President, Secretary and Treasurer). We voted as officers: Shivani for President, Sneha for Secretary, and Nikki for Treasurer. To file the paperwork, we'll need about $20 from everybody.

UCSD and Calit2 Involvement: Sukumar discussed being involved with, separate from GRaIN, already starting to form an official Calit2 Center on Sustainability. He recommended that we just get GRaIN going, and worry about the UCSD/Calit2 relationship as we go. As Calit2 is forming this Center, we can get key "faculty champions" involved with GRaIN. For example, Vish Krishnan has a Social Entrepreneurship class/series in the works. Sukumar will talk to UCSD professors: Lisa Shaffer, Nate Delson, and Vish Krishnan; to keep them in the loop of what we are doing.

MARKETING&EVENTSUPDATE

Grainy Film Series: Derek is booking a couple movie events, and approached CRCA to sponsor the events financially. He has reserved the following dates: May 7, May 14, May 22, May 28, June 4, June 19 for either Grain or VR/vidgame related movies. We discussed possible films to feature, including: "Planet Earth", "Infinite Vision", "Life & debt", "Power of Community", or "Manufactured Landscapes". The Marketing team will put together promotional materials for the Grain film series, as soon as the dates and films are confirmed.
IN Groups: Although independent organizations, we discussed GRaIN's collaboration with other local San Diego Innovation Networks (INs), like the Triton(Tech) Innovation Network (TIN), and the Women's Innovation Network. These groups each have their focus, and different mission (GRaIN: Sustainable/Responsible vs. TIN: Technology vs. WIN: Women), but share the vision of enabling young people to come together in real and virtual communities and to innovate -- meaning, not just saying but doing. With money allocated for this purpose from TIN, Nikki will organize an IN get-together to promote each of these groups, and start building that community in San Diego. This get-together will be possibly a picnic at the Bear (Calit2 mall), Xtreme croquet, or a happy hour. Date, venue and event ideas are welcome.
Marketing Materials: Derek, Nikki, and Shivani had a productive marketing meeting, and we will have a pamphlet and biz card ready by next wk. We also discussed promotional handouts that attract more attention than wordy brochures, like Grain growth packets (CA poppy seeds in a biodegradable paper mash with the Grain logo on, when you plant the little ball, a few weeks later poppies/wildflowers sprout).
Temporary Public Online Presence: Derek bought 'grainium.com' (sp?) for our GRAIN FORUM/innovation network website to serve as a temporary online presence until more advanced designs and networking tools are implemented.

Groupware Backend: Derek will be putting up a Wetpaint site as groupware for back-end organizational purposes (wiki, polls, shared files, etc.).
Listserv: Prior to establishing the advanced people-matching database or snazzy grainium.com site, Derek recommended that we establish a simpler listserv to start building a community. He noted that mailing lists tend to elicit more discussion that web forums, where the user must first actively visit the site before commenting. We then discussed the idea of having a "value added" mailing to this list, that offers more than random user comments or announcements of upcoming events. Specifically, we could have a "Featured Project" with a short story about an Innovator working a cool sustainable/appropriate/responsible technologies to direct the respondent listserv conversation, (like the SNL Coffee Talk: "Here's a topic: Did Truman drop the atomic bomb to defeat the Japanese or to scare the Russians? Discuss.")
People-Project-Matching: Shivani, Nikki, Garrett, Derek and Albert will talk with various IT contacts to get them on board with the Grainium online community. We want to leverage existing resources and code (like Charity Focus and TIN), and ensure that our infrastructure is expandable and flexible with existing databases we may want to collaborate with in the future. Shivani will contact Nipun Mehta at charityfocus.org to see if we could use his people-match-project- code. We will also communicate in the near term with the Alumni Assocation, the Calit2 Research Portal (Jerry Sheehan),. Simultaneously, we will all brainstorm session on projects, the process,what we're doing, and what we have to offer, before bringingSrishti, DevLab, UCI, and Jaipur Foot on board.
